According to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association Abbreviations 6.24 - 6.52 (2019, p. 172-191) and APA Style
"Most abbreviations must be defined (explained) in an APA Style paper upon first use. However, it is also important to consider overall level of use of abbreviations in a paper to ensure you are using neither too many nor too few abbreviations."
According to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2019, p. 268) 8.21 Abbreviating Group Authors:
Within the Text- As stated in section 6.25 of the APA manual spell out the full name of the group author followed by the abbreviation with the first usage within the text.
Reference List- Write out the entire group author name as it is printed from the original source. Do not abbreviate.
In-text Citations:
Narrative Citation- If the group name first apprears in a narrative citation, include the abbreviation in square brackets, followed by a comma and the year such as: Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC, 2021) is located in Gwinnett County.
Parenthetical Citation- If the group name first apprears in a parenthetical citation, include the abbreviation in square brackets, followed by a comma and the year such as: (Georgia Gwinnett College [GGC], 2021).
According to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2019, p. 294) 9.25 Periodical Sources:
Reproduce periodical titles as shown on the cited work. If the periodical's offiicial title includes an abbreviation, reproduce that abbreviated titile in the reference (e.g. PLOS ONE, JAMA Pediatrics). However, do not abbreviate peridical titles yourself (e.g. do not abbreviate The New England Journal of Medicine to N Engl J Med). Likewise, do not reproduce abbreviated titles from other reference lists or databases (e.g. if you find an article from JAMA Pediatrics in PubMed Central, use JAMA Pediatrics in the reference, not PubMed Central's abbreviation of JAMA Pediatr).
