Attendance and Late Work

I do not grade attendance. Being in class and working with me and your classmates is essential, however, to meeting proficiencies and achieving passing scores in group participation and on the holistic rubric.

If you know you cannot be in class or log into class in order to meet a submission deadline, contact me as soon as possible by phone or email to arrange for an early submission. I do not grade late assignments except for extenuating or emergency circumstances, such as a documented health problem, a family emergency, jury duty, military reserve service obligations, and participation in college-approved activities. In these instances, students can provide documentation and request assignment exemptions or extensions via email in order to create an official record.

Class Communication

General questions about the course or course content should be asked in class to benefit the entire class.

Personal questions or question you think about outside of class hours can be asked by phone, email, MS Teams, or text. We can also schedule meetings through MS Teams based on the times I’ve listed at the top of the syllabus.

Note the following:

  • GGC has supplied me with a “softphone.” The softphone is an add-on to Microsoft Teams, which allows you to call or text me from a phone as you call any other phone number. However, it allows me to receive calls and text messages only when connected to the internet.
  • If you cannot reach me or have questions or concerns I cannot answer or address, please contact your GGC mentor or the GGC School of Liberal Arts.
  • Check D2L for Announcements and your GGC email every day. This is especially important in an online course.
  • When corresponding by email, I can communicate with you using only your GGC email. Due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), I will not respond to emails from other domains (yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, etc.).
  • When you contact me, you should consider the message official correspondence. As such, messages should have proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. You should also address me as Professor Hess in messages, not by my first name.

Course Changes

This course syllabus provides a general plan for this course. I may need to make changes to the syllabus, including changes to assignments, projects, examinations, etc., in order to accommodate the needs of the class as a whole and fulfill the goals of the course.

Meetings

Student preparedness and professionalism makes for the most effective one-on-one meetings. A student should 1. Be on time, 2. Bring or email a typed and self-edited copy of his or her current assignment, 3. Have questions at the ready, and 4. Take notes during the meeting.

Perfumes and Fragrances

Unfortunately, although I appreciate them, I am terribly allergic to certain perfumes and fragrances and have almost instantaneous allergic reactions to them. Please do not wear scented creams, oils, perfumes, colognes, or heavily-scented aftershaves to in-person classes or meetings. If I have a reaction, I will have to end class or cancel the meeting. This isn’t a big deal in online classes,  but it’s a fun bit of trivia.

Expectations of Students

  • Arrive to class and login to meetings prepared and on time.
  • Ask questions about written instructions when you have them, right when you have them.
  • If you do not have a computer, computer labs are available on campus, or laptops can be checked out from the library.
  • Check GGC email and Brightspace (D2L) announcements, grades, attendance, and content materials regularly.
  • Use Brightspace 101 for Students to help learn to navigate and use D2L like a pro.
  • Please communicate and otherwise conduct yourselves respectfully.
  • Add important dates from the syllabus and D2L to your own calendar, with reminders.
