I am an Atlanta area writer, creative, and professor, but I am originally from a tiny little place in Michigan named Smiths Creek. I grew up riding horses, drawing, and playing the French horn. I have a bachelor of science degree in Theatre and Interpretation from Central Michigan University, a master of arts in Theatre History and Criticism from Ohio University, and a master of fine arts in Creative Writing from Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics in Boulder, Colorado.
I’ve published several chapbooks of poetry and short stories, a play, a textbook about sentence diagramming, a handbook of outdoor activities with writing prompts, and I am the editor of a little publishing press called Gypsy Daughter. I’ve been an English and general education professor since March of 2008, having previously held jobs as an administrative assistant, bookkeeper, sales clerk, product expert at an art supply store, library associate, high school teacher, tutor, properties manager, costumer, make-up artist, and managing director at a non-profit playhouse. My liberal arts education has prepared me to do a lot of things over the years!
My teaching methods and philosophy stem from a contemplative mission, meaning that in addition to making sure students learn about writing and the writing process, I want my students to have opportunities to practice mindfulness, compassion, and collaborative community engagement at every opportunity.
I've recently started playing drums as both a contemplative practice and with my husband. We have a pretty little garden in the backyard, and I love taking pictures of my cats because they are funny and beautiful. I’m learning to be a Dungeon Master for D&D, and I’m digging that (pun intended), as well.
You can read my work, including lessons for student writers, on my blog.
