This guide provides information for Kaufman Library's transition to OpenAthens authentication of electronic resources with GALILEO.

Updating Direct Links

Updating Direct Links

OpenAthens uses different technology to manage access to resources than proxy-based authentication. Therefore, the prefix of links saved will change. As a result, students, faculty, and staff will also need to update any bookmarks, saved links, or reading list links they maintain apart from the Libraries' web presence. This change will most likely impact "power users" and faculty who have embedded links to library resources in the University's learning management system, D2L.

Over time, library personnel will work to update links on our website; however, all links that currently rely on proxy-based authentication should continue to work for the foreseeable future. The process of updating links is fairly time-consuming. Until all links are revised, students, faculty, and staff may see different login forms, either for proxy-based authentication or OpenAthens, depending on how they access the resource.

During the 2019-20 academic year, librarians will develop resources and share information with faculty to help them update links to library resources in D2L. These resources will appear on this page as they become available.

Steps for Updating Direct Links

All campus researchers are encouraged to follow these basic steps for updating saved links and bookmarks to the Libraries' resources:

  1. Start from the Kaufman Library homepage (
  2. Search for and locate the saved or bookmarked resource in the library collection.
  3. Save a new link or bookmark using the permalink provided by the database or publisher website.
  4. You can also use the OpenAthens Link Generator to create an OpenAthens link to the resource.
  5. If saving a link or creating a bookmark to one of the Libraries' databases, click on the Share icon to the right of the database title () and use the friendly URL.
