Librarian TIP: Brainstorm about key terms that relate to your topic. For example, if you are interested in the effects of pet ownership on depression in elderly populations, you might use these terms as search terms:

  • elderly AND pet ownership AND  depression

While many library databases no longer need the word AND in between terms, it does help to conceptualize your topic. For example, you might next do the same search but drop the word elderly and instead use: geriatric

  • geriatric AND pet ownership AND  depression

Also, the * is a wild card. Using the * will find variant endings: teen* = teen, teens, teenager, teenagers....

  • CAPITALIZING the AND is not necessary.

Once your find relevant articles, change to a Subject search, utilizing the subject terms that are used to describe some of the relevant articles you found. For example:
