Course Reserves for Faculty

Faculty may put print, DVD, or electronic materials on reserve for student use. If you wish to place materials on reserve, you have three options:

  1. Come by the Circulation Desk (Kaufman Library) with your materials to fill out a Course Reserve Form.
  2. Email the completed Course Reserves Form to Stephanie Bennett and drop off your materials at the Circulation Desk.
  3. Print out the completed Course Reserves Form and drop it off with your materials at the Circulation Desk.

Please note:  Complete bibliographic citations must accompany all excerpts submitted for course reserve, with the exception of instructor-created materials. Also, items obtained via Interlibrary Loan or GIL Express cannot be placed on course reserve. Please remember to retain a Fair Use Checklist for your records.

Questions About Course Reserves?

  • One article from a journal, magazine, or newspaper issue
  • One chapter from a book (must be less than 10% of the book)
  • One short story, essay, or poem
  • One chart, graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon, or picture from a book, journal, magazine, or newspaper
  • Notes, quizzes/tests, or other materials created by the instructor for course instruction
  • Entire bound books (textbooks, etc.) or DVDs; these can be GGC materials or a personal copy

What kinds of materials can I place on electronic reserve?

A photocopy or electronic file of:

  • One article from a journal, newspaper, or magazine issue.
  • Three articles from a bound volume of a journal (different issues).
  • One chapter from a book (must be less than 10% of the book).
  • One short story, essay, or poem.
  • One chart, graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon, or picture from a book, journal, magazine, or newspaper.
  • Notes, quizzes/tests, or other materials created by the instructor for course instruction.

How will I know when my course reserve is ready?

When your course reserve is ready, a library staff person will contact you via e-mail.  Please do not assign readings from your course reserve until you receive this notification!

Can I renew my course reserves?

Yes, but traditional reserves only.  At the end of the semester, you will be e-mailed about your preferences for item renewal or retrieval.  Please respond to this e-mail as soon as possible so that your items can be renewed quickly for the next semester.

Due to copyright restrictions, most materials on electronic reserve cannot be renewed for a subsequent semester without the instructor obtaining copyright permission.  An exception:  Materials created by the instructor for course instruction.

Why do I need a password for an electronic reserve?

All electronic reserves are password-protected and limited to students in a single course.  You will need to provide this password to your students; library staff does not provide passwords to students.  Passwords should be at least 5 letters and/or numbers and can be case-sensitive.  Avoid using the course abbreviation or number.

Why do I need to retain a copy of the Fair Use Checklist form?

This form is required by the University System of Georgia and is intended to help you determine if the material you are submitting for reserve weighs for or against Fair Use.
